Abstract: The ANDRILL (ANtarctic geological DRILLing) Coulman High Project – Phase 1 Site Surveys, also known as USAP Science Event G-049-M, was a collaborative activity with NZ Science Event K-001-C. Antarctic field activities were undertaken in the austral summer of 2010-2011. A significant amount of equipment, supplies and people safely traversed approximately 120 miles from McMurdo Station to establish ... View entire text

Purpose: The primary goals of the surveys were to verify and evaluate lateral and vertical movements of the ice margin using global positioning system (GPS) measurements and to deploy oceanographic instruments through the ice shelf to collect tidal and ocean current measurements that could be used to model the behavior of the ANDRILL sea riser and drill string prior to proposed geologic drilling. The SCINI (Submersible Capable of under-Ice Navigation and Imaging) remotely operated vehicle (ROV) was deployed for the first time through an ice shelf in Antarctica to explore the underside of the ice shelf while conducting engineering tests.
