Australian Antarctic Division AtlasEntry ID: AADC_Atlas
Abstract: The Australian Antarctic Division Data Centre is the custodian for all
Australian scientific data collected in Antarctica including GIS data
comprising over 5 million square kilometres of Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic
regions. The Australian Antarctic Division Atlas connects directly to GIS data
stored in Data Centre Oracle spatial database (over 530 layers) which forms the
... basis for all Australian Antarctic mapping activities.
The GIS data for the Australian Antarctic Territories and Sub-Antarctic regions
are spread over large areas that are not directly connected, comprising many
UTM zones. The data is stored in geographic coordinates (WGS 1984) and as such
requires projection into UTM coordinates for each distinct zone for display
within the web-based interface of the Atlas.
The Australian Antarctic Division Atlas has been developed using ESRI's ArcIMS,
Direct Connect for Oracle 8i Spatial, Macromedia Flash Remoting, and ColdFusion
MX. The staff of the Australian Antarctic Division and the general public can
access all of the Australian Antarctic Data Centre's GIS data as well as
extract the layers to shape files for their use in their own ESRI applications.
In addition, users can search for features and cross-link to and from other
applications such as maps in PDF format within the current viewing extent.
Viewing extents are also linked with detailed information on places contained
in the official Australian Antarctic Gazetteer and to scientific datasets held
within the Australian Antarctic Data Centre.
The GeoServer WFS (Web Feature Server) is also available through the Atlas to
provide the GIS data as GML in unprojected form. The Web Feature Server
provides access the Data Centre's Antarctic GIS data (stored in an Oracle
Spatial database) using the Open GIS Consortium's specification for Web Feature
Servers (http://www.opengis.org/)). The OGC specification forms the foundation
for web services that facilitate the sharing of GIS data through the XML
variant, GML (Geographic Markup Language). By using a web browser (or a WFS
client), a GIS layer (feature) can be delivered using GML.
The Australian Antarctic Division Atlas also provides Australian Antarctic GIS
data to the Geoscience Standing Group's Cybercartographic Atlas project
