The following was abstracted for a data availability announcement in
EOS v. 79 no. 4 pg. 47

A climate, vegetation, and soils dataset of the United States, assembled
by the Vegetation/Ecosystem Modeling and Analysis Project (VEMAP), is now
available online and on CD-ROM. VEMAP is an international, multi-institutional
collaboration with the goal of evaluating the sesitivity of ecosystem structure
and function to altered climate, CO2, and other forcings.

The datasets are on a 0.5 degree latitude/longitude gris. Climate data were
developed to reflect those aspects of climate ("bioclimate") that control
ecological dynamics. The dataset includes both daily and monthly
representations of the mean climate and was interpolated to account for
topographic effects. Climate data and scenarios are available in both gridded
and time-sequential (monthly series) formats.

Selected gridded outputs from the VEMAP biogeography and biogeochemistry
model simulations are available on the web and ftp sites.

A companion gridded historical (99 yr) gridded climate dataset and (100+yr)
transient climate change scenarios for VEMAP Phase 2 will be publically
released late 1998. Animations of these series are on the web site.

Dataset updates are announced periodically on the Web site.
