Tide and Current Predictions from NOAA's National Ocean Service, Oceanographic Products and Services Division (OPSD)
Entry ID: OES_CEOB_GENRL_TIDE_CURRENT

Summary
Abstract: The traditional circulation prediction products published by the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric (NOAA) include the tide and tidal current prediction
tables and tidal current charts/diagrams. Tide tables include the predicted
times and heights of high and low waters for every day in the year for
reference stations and differences for calculating the same characteristics for
other locations. Tidal current tables include predictions of the times of
slack water and the times and velocities of maximum flood and ebb currents for
reference stations with differences for calculating predictions for other
locations. Regional combined tide and tidal current tables are being published
on an experimental basis.

NOAA published tidal current charts for 11 estuaries in the United States. The
charts show the speed and direction for tidal current for each hour, or equal
interval, of the current throughout a tidal cycle. The charts are used in
concert with published daily predictions from the annual prediction tables.
Tidal current charts provide predictions for only those locations where current
data were actually acquired and analyzed. Results from a recent evaluation
show that of the 11 published charts, Boston Harbor is the only estuary for
which the chart is fully acceptable. Two of the 11 charts, San Francisco Bay
and New York Harbor, were recently withdrawn from distribution after the
evaluation showed that predictions based on the charts were not as accurate as
those determined from more recent information published in the annual tables.

Circulation and water level forecast atlases, including the effects of wind and
river flow, result from the application of numerical circulation models. Tidal
atlases are now available and total circulation atlases are under development.
Atlases provide estimates of currents and water levels throughout an estuary,
not just at locations where measurements were acquired, and they present
circulation prediction characteristics in graphical form in addition to tabular
form. Specific model simulation are available for any area where
Office of Coast Survey models have been implemented.

Additional information and products and services include special tide and
current predictions for the public, National Weather Service, and foreign
hydrographic offices; science and technology consultation and transfer;
technical memoranda and reports, special reports, and circulation survey
reports; and information for nautical charts and hydrographic project
instructions.
