New record of moss and thermophilic bacteria species and physico-chemical properties of geothermal soils on the northwest slope of Mt. Melbourne (Antarctica) in 2002
Entry ID: Thermophilic_bacteria_Melbourne

Abstract: Four samples of surface soils, one with shoots of an unidentified moss species,
were collected from a geothermal site on the northwest slope of volcanic Mt.
Melbourne (northwest Victoria Land, continental Antarctica) to determine
physico-chemical properties, isolate existing strains of etherotrophic
microorganisms, and identify the moss species through molecular genetic
techniques. Surface soils ... View entire text

Quality Four surface soil sample (with and without mosses) were collected along a
thermal gradient and placed in sterile polyethylene bags. In Terra Nova Bay
station the water content and pH were determined in soil subsample. In Italy,
in soil samples was determined the total concentration of organic C and N.
Concentrations of major ions and trace elements were determined by ion
chromatography and atomic absorption spectrometry in water soil extracts.
Isolation, maintenance and characterization of bacteria, moss DNA isolation,
amplification and sequencing were carried out in Italian laboratories.
