Summary
Abstract: The Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) flown aboard the Tiros-N
series NOAA satellites measures radiation in the visible and infrared spectrum
region. The AVHRR is a cross-track scanning system and features four or five
spectral channels: two visible and three (two on the four channel AVHRR)
infrared channels. The odd numbered satellites (NOAA-7 and -9) carried the
five channel AVHRR. For the Tiros-N, NOAA -6, -8, and -10, Channel 5 is a
repeat of Channel 4.

The instantaneous field of view (IFOV) is approximately 1.3
milliradians yielding a resolution at the satellite subpoint of 1.1 km for a
nominal altitude of 833 km. The scanning rate of the AVHRR is 360 scans per
second. The swath is 2048 pixels wide. Typically a few swaths will cover most
of Canada. Coverage is 100% of Canada.

1 km and 4 km NOAA AVHRR imagery are also processed on the CCRS
GeoComp System to produce geocoded and composite products. Please see the
datasets descriptions listed for the Manitoba Remote Sensing Centre (MRSC).

An AVHRR composite of Canada in JPEG format is available for
downloading through GeoGratis free of charge and is subject to copyright
restrictions and disclaimer. Please consult the section 'Earth Observation
Imagery' at http://geogratis.cgdi.gc.ca for additional information.This data is
used primarily for natural resources data management and provides excellent
educational material.
