Daily, Monthly, Seasonal, and Annual Sunshine, Precipitation, and Pressure Distribution Data for Europe and South Europe (1870-1910)
Entry ID: NCL00164_165_166_175

Summary
Abstract: The sunshine data resides in 1 book, 'Dauer Des Sonnenschiens in
Europa' (C/d K28) written in German. The data contained in this book
are monthly and annual sunshine for Europe from 1880 to 1893. These
data are for each individual month and averaged over the period.
Monthly sunshine duration for hourly intervals are for each individual
month and averaged over the period. The back of the book has graphs
of the annual and monthly sunshine hours for European cities averaged
over the period.

The precipitation data resides in 1 book, 'Uber Die Vertheilung Des
Regens in Der Jarlichen Periode in Mittleren Europa (1870)' (C/d
II743v P1259). The data contained in this book are tables of monthly
and daily precipitation for Europe. These tables are for each day or
month of 1870. Monthly and five-day totals of precipitation are
tabulated for many European cities. The greatest amount of data are
for Germany, Italy, Belgium, and Norway. The normal amounts for each
month are also included for the above countries.

The surface and pressure distribution data resides in 2 books,
'Repartition De La Pression Atmospherique Sur L'Europe' (Misc. Foreign
Publications) written in French, and 'Die Luftdruckverteilung Uber
Europa, Dargestellt Nach Pentadenmitteln Klimatologie Von
Suddeutschland' (C/d A465) written in German. The data contained in
the first book (Misc. Foreign Publications) are maps of the mean
monthly and annual pressure distribution for Europe averaged over the
period 1881 to 1895. The data contained in the second book are
five-day means of surface pressure over Europe for each month of the
period 1880 to 1909.

The Southern Europe precipitation data resides in 1 book, 'Die
Niederschlagverteilung in Sudosteuropa' (C/d R413) written in
German. The data contained in this book are monthly and annual
precipitation tables and maps for Southern Europe averaged over the
period 1876 to 1910. Monthly tables included in these data are mean
precipitation and highest and lowest mean precipitation; days of rain
and thunderstorms; distribution of depressions; and days of snowfall.
There are also annual tables of mean precipitation. Maps included in
these data are precipitation regimes in Southern Europe, winter month
of maximum precipitation, summer month of maximum precipitation,
annual precipitation, and prevailing wind direction.

These books are part of the foreign meteorological data collection
held by the NOAA Central Library in Washington, DC. Information in
this collection dates back to the 18th century for daily, monthly,
seasonal, and annual tabular summaries, and the 19th century for
weather maps. These data are the result of foreign exchange
agreements, but the collection has not been updated since 1983.
