Annual and Seasonal Global Variation in Total Ozone and Layer - Mean Ozone, 1958-1989, CDIAC NDP-023/R1Entry ID: CDIAC_NDP23
Abstract: This package contains seasonal and annual total ozone variations and
layer mean ozone variations expressed as a percent deviations from the
1958-1977 mean. The total ozone variations were derived from mean
monthly ozone values published in 'Ozone Data for the World' by the
Atmospheric Environment Service in cooperati with the World
Meteorological Organization. The layer mean ozone variations are
... derived from ozonesonde and Umkehr observations.
The total ozone data are for four regions in north temperate latitudes
(Soviet Union, Europe, North America, and Asia), five climatic zones
(north and south polar, north and south temperate, and tropical), both
hemispheres, and the world. The data were originally measured using
Dobson spectrophotometers or ozonometers (Soviet Union).
Layer-mean ozone variations based upon ozonesonde and Umkehr
observations are presented for the north and south temperate and polar
zones, and for the stratosphere, troposphere, and tropopause
layers. Again, the data are expressed as percent deviations to the
nearest tenth of a percent from the mean based upon data available
through 1977. Variations based upon Umkehr observations extend back to
1961 while ozonesonde data extend back to 1967.
Based on linear regression, there has been an ozone decrease of about
2% between 1970 and 1981 in the high stratosphere (32-48 km)
layer. Both Umkehr and ozonesonde observations show a 1-3% decrease in
ozone in the 16-24 and 24-32 km layers of north temperate latitudes
between 1970 and 1981. In the 2-8 km layer of north temperate
latitudes, there was an ozonesonde-derived increase of about 12%
between 1970 and 1981. There is no evidence from ozonesonde data of
an ozone increase between 1970 and 1981 in the 8-16 km layer.
All CDIAC numerical data packages include copies of pertinent
literature discussing the data, summaries discussing the background,
source and scope of the data, as well as applications limitations and
restrictions of the data. This data set also resides on the CDIAC
CD-ROM which contains many other CDIAC data sets.
CDIAC has provided an anonymous FTP area to all data files, retrieval
codes, and descriptive files for the NDP's that are presently
available. The FTP address is:
ftp://cdiac.esd.ornl.gov or 188.8.131.52
and input your email address as the password.
The NDP-023/R1 data set is located in CDIAC's anonymous FTP in
pub/ndp023. All files are compressed (UNIX) ASCII text files. All
the data bases provided in this area are fully documented and are also
available on 9-track magnetic tape, CD-ROM, or IBM-formatted, high or
low-density floppy diskettes.
