Summary
Abstract: The purpose of the "Assessment of the Impact of Environmental
Stresses on the Health of Agroecosystems" dataset is to
establish a protocol for assessing the health of agroecosystems.
The objective of this research was to develop methodology to
assess the health and vitality of agroecosystems in relation to
inputs of environmental contaminants and global environmental
changes and to field test the methodology on a limited pilot
basis and implement final methodology on a regional/national
basis..


Collection Organization: USDA Agricultural Reaserch Service

Collection Methodology: Develop an indicator testing program to
identify selected indicators of different anthropogenic and
general stressors; field test these indicators in the pilot
program. Develop protocol and implement a regional monitoring
program for following the health of agroecosystems; plan to
extend program to national level. Research focused on evaluation
of condition indicators including: measures of plant
productivity and soil quality, landscape structure, pesticide
and fertilizer use, pond water quality, and land use. Other
indicators evaluated include soil nematode community structure
(the biotic component of soil quality), species composition and
richness (a measure of insect diversity), clones of white clover
as a biological measure of ozone stress, and several measures of
landscape structure.
