Summary
Abstract: The purpose of "Alternative Technology to Methyl Bromide for Control of
Soilborne Diseases of Strawberries (Methyl Bromide Alternatives)" include: 1)
evaluating alternative soil fumigants & non-chemical alternatives on diseases,
yield, and quality of strawberry; 2) evaluating the effectiveness of cover
crops, crop incorporations and crop rotation in enhancing soil populations of
saprophytic (non-pathogenic) microorganisms; 3) identifying colonization of
soil and roots by microbial species and various known plant pathogens following
various treatments; and 4) evaluating the virulence and pathogenecity of
soilborne organisms infecting strawberry cultivars.

Collection Organization: University of California, Davis

Collection Methodology: Field and laboratory experiments conducted in the
Salinas Valley of California and at U.C. Davis. Effects of alternative soil
fumigants and various cultural practices on disease epidemiology including
pathogen and microbial populations, yield and quality of strawberry monitored.
Experimental blocks sampled for soilborne pathogens and soil characteristics
before and after fumigation and various treatments. Use of selected cover crops
including sudan grass, rye grass and rye grass/vetch combinations and rotations
with broccoli, cauliflower or cabbage will be evaluated for disease control
abilities. Non-chemical approaches will be examined at institutional field
sites where the PI has greater control.
