Summary
Vegetation was originally to be derived from the UNESCO vegetation
maps for the Mediterranean and the area south of the Sahara as well as
the NOAA chlorophyl index imagery. However, careful inspection of the
data indicated that the classifications, based largely on potential
vegetation conditions, did not provide an adequate estimate of actual
vegetative ... structure or crown cover. The vegetation patterning shown
on the DMA topographic map sheets shows vegetation structure and
average density for forest, tree savanna, and bunch grass. It was
decided in conjunction with the FAO desertification coordinator to
include the DMA vegetation information in the data base.

The DMA sheets originally at 1:2 million were photo reduced as color
film transparencies and overlain by the FAO basemaps with attached
matte film overlays. The vegetation patterns were traced and given a
two digit code number. The first digit described the vegetation type
and the second digit indicated drainage condition.
