Canadas oceans and major waterways so that they are clean, safe, productive
and accessible. To ensure sustainable use of fisheries resources and
facilitate marine trade and commerce.
The mandate of the Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Maritimes Region, is to
promote the understanding, conservation, and optimum use of marine resources
and the aquatic environment for the benefit of present and future generations.
To meet its responsibilities for navigational safety, environmental protection,
and marine industry support.

The Science Branch of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Maritimes Region, includes
some 410 scientists, hydrographers, and technicians located at five sites:
Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO), Dartmouth; Gulf Fisheries Centre,
Moncton; St. Andrew's Biological Station, St. Andrew's; and Maritime Centre,
Halifax; with the Science Branch headquarters located at BIO in Dartmouth.
