The data resides in 10 books, 'Beobachtungen des observations de
l'Observatoire Magnetique et Meteorolgique a Ekaterinbourg' (C/db
AO-E) written in German and Russian; 'Distribution des Precipitations
et Epaisseur de la Neige' (C/db AO-Ep) written in French and Russian;
and 'Observations de l'Observatoire Meteorologique de l'Institut
Forestier Imperiale St. Petersburg' (C/db Ao-F) written in French and
Russian.
The data contained in these books are hourly surface and upper air
observations and daily and monthly surface climatic data for each
month from 1876 to 1918. Magnetic observations are also included in
the data. These data are for all of Russia, but the tabular
observations are for Ekaterinbourg and St. Petersburg, Russia.
Parameters included in the hourly observations are pressure, air and
soil temperature, humidity, cloudiness, cloud movement, upper-level
and surface winds, sunshine, and precipitation.
Daily variables for each month of the period incorporated in these
data are the following: mean pressure, air, soil, and snow surface
temperature, cloudiness, winds, humidity, vapor pressure, and sunshine
duration; maximum and minimum air, soil, and snow surface temperature,
pressure, humidity, cloudiness, vapor pressure, and winds; cloud
movement; and evaporation totals.
Monthly parameters contained in these data are: mean pressure, winds,
and sunshine; mean maximum and minimum air, soil, and snow surface
temperature, humidity, cloudiness, and evaporation; absolute maximum
and minimum pressure, air temperature, 24 hour cloudiness, 24 hour
precipitation, winds, and daily sunshine; precipitation and sunshine
totals; number of days of maximum and minimum temperature < 0, clear
skies, cloudy skies, precipitation , snow, precipitation of a certain
intensity, snow cover, thunder, lightning, and fog; wind frequency;
percent possible sunshine; and intensity of solar radiation.
Additional parameters include daily snow depth and density, first and
last frosts of each year, freezing and breaking up dates of ice on the
rivers and lakes.
Magnetic parameters included in these data are hourly readings, daily
mean, maximum, and minimum, monthly mean, absolute monthly maximum,
and minimum of declination, horizontal component, and vertical
component.
These books are part of the foreign meteorological data collection
held by the NOAA Central Library in Washington, DC. Information in
this collection dates back to the 18th century for daily, monthly,
seasonal, and annual tabular summaries, and the 19th century for
weather maps. These data are the result of foreign exchange
agreements, but the collection has not been updated since 1983.
