Abstract:

This database contains monthly and seasonal ozone records for 1980-85 and 1987, at the state and county levels of aggregation, for the states in the northeastern U.S. States included: Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia. The aggregates estimate the magnitude of ozone concentrations for the state or county, constructed from hourly observations (parts per billion) taken at monitoring sites located throughout the region. The hourly observations for each monitoring station for each month were weighted using a sigmoidal method developed by Lefohn, et al. ("A Comparison of Indices that Describe the Relationship Between Exposure to Ozone and Reduction in the Yield of Agricultural Crops," Atmospheric Environment, Vol. 22, No. 6, pp. 1229-40, 1988) and summed to give a cumulative exposure index. The geostatistical spatial smoothing technique known as kriging was used to interpolate the monitoring station data to a 40 by 32 block grid of 30 minute by 30 minute blocks covering the entire region. These blocks were then overlaid on maps of the state and county boundaries and blocks and portions of blocks that fell in each state or county were weighted by land area and averaged over the state or county. The spring, summer and April-September aggregates were constructed by summing the monthly estimates for each period.
