Abstract:
The Swedish Coast data resides in 6 books, 'Svenska Hydrografisk-Biologiska Komissionens Fyrskeppsundersokning' (C/dab AO-2) written in Swedish. The data contained in these books are daily and monthly air and sea temperature, salinity, current, and wind observations for locations off the Swedish coast in the Baltic and North Seas. These data are for each month of the period 1923 to 1935. The ... variables included in these data are: daily salinity; surface winds; air and water temperature observations; and monthly mean water temperatures. The sea variables are measured at different ocean depths. The air temperature is determined only at the surface.
The precipitation data resides in 1 book, 'Hydrografiska Byran Arsbok' (C/dab AO-2) written in Swedish. The data contained in this book are daily, monthly, and seasonal precipitation, ice, snow, and water tables for cities in Sweden from 1908 to 1918. The daily parameters included in these data are: height of water observations; water temperature, oxygen, calcium-oxide, chlorine, and sulfate analysis; and snow cover. Monthly parameters incorporated in these data for each individual month are: precipitation totals; number of days of snow; precipitation greater then a certain amount; mean, maximum and minimum water level, water amounts, streamflow amounts, and ice and snow thickness. The only monthly variable that is averaged over the period is mean water height. Seasonal parameters included in these data are duration of snow cover and ice on the water bodies.
Climatic data resides in 29 books, 'Meteorologiska Iakttagelser i Sverige Utgifna Af Kong. L. Svenska Vetenskaps-Akademien' (C/dab AO) written in Swedish, and 'Observations Meteorologiques A Abisko' (C/dab AO-3) written in Swedish and French. The data contained in these books are hourly weather observation tables and daily and monthly surface climatic data for Sweden for each month of the period 1858 to 1929. The parameters included in the hourly observations are pressure, air and soil temperature, humidity, winds, sunshine, cloudiness, and vapor pressure. Daily variables contained in the first book (C/dab AO) are the following: five-day mean temperature; absolute maximum and minimum temperature; precipitation totals; and five-day mean number of days of a particular wind direction.
Daily parameters included in the second book (C/dab AO-3) are: mean pressure, temperature, humidity, and vapor pressure; maximum and minimum pressure, temperature, humidity, and vapor pressure; surface lake temperatures; snow cover; and mean snow layers. In addition, there are diaries of cloud types and movement, hydrometeors, and aurora in the second book.
The following monthly parameters are included in the first book: mean pressure, temperature, humidity, wind velocity, and vapor pressure; mean maximum and minimum temperature; absolute maximum and minimum pressure, temperature, and 24 hour precipitation totals; precipitation totals; monthly number of days with precipitation, snow, hail, fog, thunderstorms, clear skies, cloudy skies, and partly cloudy skies; and number of days with calm winds and wind directions at a particular hour.
These books are part of the foreign meteorological data collection held by the NOAA Central Library in Washington, DC. Information in this collection dates back to the 18th century for daily, monthly, seasonal, and annual tabular summaries, and the 19th century for weather maps. These data are the result of foreign exchange agreements, but the collection has not been updated since 1983.
