Abstract:
Precipitation data resides in 2 books, 'Kevattulvasta Ja Kesakauden
Sateista Maanviljely Soloja Silmalla Pitaen' (C/dab K84ke), and 'Pouta
kasvakautena Suomessa' (C/dab K84p), both written in Finnish, German
notes.
The data contained in the first book (C/dab K84ke) are seasonal, and
annual precipitation data for Finland from 1886 to 1916. The
parameters for each individual year included in these
... data are amount
for a particular period of the year, and mean 5,10,and 15 day snow
amounts. The variables averaged over the period included in these
data are mean amount for a particular period of the year, maximum
annual snow depth, probability of a dry period between May 15th and
June 30th for different length dry spells, and the number of days of
precipitation greater then a particular amount for a particular period
of the year. Also included in these data are the greatest annual snow
cover depth, water content, and thickness of the snow cover during the
period 1910-1916, earliest and latest snowfall from 1892 to 1911, and
absolute mean dry period (1915 only).
The second book (C/dab K84p) contains the following data: mean number
of days in a month for a given range amount of precipitation; mean
monthly number of summer month days with precipitation of a certain
intensity; and the probability and actual amount of an absolute dry
period of different lengths for a season. There is a map of the mean
amount of precipitation in Finland during the summer season for the
period (inland and coastal stations).
These books are part of the foreign meteorological data collection
held by the NOAA Central Library in Washington, DC. Information in
this collection dates back to the 18th century for daily, monthly,
seasonal, and annual tabular summaries, and the 19th century for
weather maps. These data are the result of foreign exchange
agreements, but the collection has not been updated since 1983.
