Abstract:
Ice cores drilled at Siple Station (Antarctica) for 200-m depth were analyzed for CH4 concentrations for the period 1771-1956. Two different methods were used for extracting air in the ice core (dry extraction and vacuum melt extraction). CH4 concentrations increased from 0.78 ppmv in 1771 to 1.30 ppmv in 1955 by dry extraction method and from 0.80 ppmv in 1771 to 1.34 ppmv in 1956 by vacuum melt extraction. The Siple Station ice core data were provided by B. Stauffer, A. Neftel, G. Fischer, and H. Oeschger (Physics Institute, University of Bern, Switzerland).
