Abstract:
This CD-ROM holds global wind/wave data derived from altimeter data
collected during the Geodetic Mission of the U.S. Navy Geodetic
Satellite (Geosat). The data span the period from March 31, 1985 through
September 30, 1986. Although the complete data set from the Geosat
Geodetic Mission was classified, in 1988 the Navy released the radar
backscatter (from which wind speed is derived) and the
... significant wave
height data. This disc holds these data and includes two wind speed
fields that were computed using different algorithms. The README file on
this disc also provides three additional wind speed algorithms proposed
since 1988 and a bibliography that includes references to papers that
discuss the algorithm used to compute significant wave height.
NOTE: Advanced programming skills are strongly recommended for users of
this CD-ROM product.
