Abstract:
Stereoscopic images of elephant seals at Atlas Cove, taken at Heard Island on 16-17 December 2008.
The Aurora Australis made a brief visit to Heard and McDonald Islands in mid-December 2008. The visit was opportunistic owing to an opening in the ship's schedule.
During the visit a number of quick surveys were undertaken, primarily assisted by helicopters.
This dataset consists of stereographic images taken by two photographers from ground level during a survey of Elephant Seal colonies at Atlas Cove. There are two folders of data, one for each photographer. Each folder contains a shot list of the photos (in an excel spreadsheet), plus the photos themselves.
Quality
General information about images: 16 Dec 2008 visit to Atlas Cove, Heard Island. Snowfall in morning affected image quality. Overcast conditions made for relatively dim and flat lighting conditions. 17 Dec 2008: revisited Atlas Cove and redid photography in good light. All images supplied in native camera format as well as .jpg.
The types of cameras used by the photograpehrs were:
Jodi Wruck - Canon Model EOS 5D Roselin Bali - Nikon Model D200
Access Constraints
These data are publicly available upon request to the Australian Antarctic Data Centre. The dataset is too large to be downloaded, but is available on a DVD.
(alternatively, AAD users can access these images online through Image Antarctica.)
However, the following conditions should be adhered to (and the original photographers should be credited):
1. ... Downloaded data are not to be used for any commercial purpose. 2. The data are for the sole use of the recipient and are not to be passed on to a third party. Because datasets are continuously updated it is better for potential users to obtain AAD sourced data directly from this web site. 3. Clear acknowledgement of the Australian Antarctic Division is to be given on any product resulting from the use of downloaded data. 4. The Australian Antarctic Division accepts no responsibility for the completeness or accuracy of downloaded data. 5. If the downloaded data are modified because errors have been detected, the Australian Antarctic Data Centre should be notified and given a copy of the updated dataset, along with an updated metadata record. This will assist the AADC to maintain high data quality standards. 6. You consent to your access information being recorded and to the Division contacting you regarding this information. You acknowledge that statistics may be compiled. 7. These digital data remain the property and copyright of the Commonwealth of Australia through the Australian Antarctic Division.
