During this project's lifetime, Ozone and NO2 atmospheric contents have been
measured daily at twilight. The required spectrometers were developed at INTA
and an agreement between INTA and DNA/IAA allowed its deployment at the
Antarctica (1994). The three devices have been installed at three different
stations: Belgrano II (Continental Antarctica 78"S, 35"W), Marambio (Antarctic
... Peninsula 64"S, 57"W) and Ushuaia(South Argentina 55"S, 68"W), respectively.
Periodic ozone soundings are being carried out since 1999. This measurements
are aimed to obtain vertical ozone and temperature profiles inside the
Antarctic Polar Vortex (at Belgrano), a critical region as far as ozone
depletion is concerned and where measurements can hardly be done due to its
inaccessibility.
Measurements have led to a data set of huge interest for the understanding of
polar air transport to mid-latitude regions during the vortex's breaking up or
to regions of utmost vorticity gradient.
The project's scientific aim is to
1.Get to know the global behavior of the South Hemisphere's total NO2 vertical
column and its relation with the spring ozone depletion.
2.Make observations of the vertical ozone distribution inside the polar Vortex
and analyze its behavior.
3.Get the total ozone vertical column measured for the times of the year when
the sun is to low to allow measurements in the classical UV range to be
performed (TOMS, Brewer, Dobson)

Durante el periodo de desarrollo del proyecto se han realizado medidas
crepusculares diarias del contenido total de ozono y NO2. Se han utilizado los
espectrometros desarrollados por el INTA e instalados en la Antartida (1994),
gracias a un convenio de colaboracion entre la Direccion Nacional del Antartico
y el INTA. Uno de los instrumentos se instalo en el interior del continente
antartico, en la Base Belgrano II, (78" S, 35" W), el segundo en Marambio (64"
S, 57" W), en la zona este de la Peninsula Antartica y el tercero en el extremo
sur del continente americano Ushuaia (55" S, 68" W).
Asimismo se comenzo en 1999 la realizacion periodica de sondeos de ozono. En
Belgrano con el fin de disponer de perfiles verticales de ozono y de
temperatura en el interior del vortice polar, region critica en el proceso
de formacion del agujero de ozono y bien conocida por la escasez de datos
disponibles. El desarrollo del proyecto ha permitido extender en el tiempo una
base de datos de gran interes para conocer los mecanismos de transporte de aire
polar hacia latitudes medias en la fase de disolucion del vortice o region en
donde el gradiente de vorticidad potencial es maximo.
Los objetivos cientificos del proyectos fueron:
1.Conocer el comportamiento global de la columna total de NO2 en el hemisferio
sur y su dependencia con la destruccion de ozono en la primavera austral
2.Observar en el corazon del vortice polar la distribucion vertical de ozono y
su desarrollo hasta su recuperacion
3.Obtener la columna total de ozono en aquellas epocas del ano en que el sol
se encuentra demasiado bajo para poder realizar observaciones en el rango UV
clasico (TOMS, Brewer y Dobson)
