Abstract:
Mapping of the major features of the Prince Charles Mountains (massifs, peaks, glaciers, etc), derived from a Landsat 7 image captured in November of 2001.
All features were mapped in ESRI's ArcGIS software, using the georeferenced Landsat 7 image as a backdrop.
Quality
The features were mapped from a Landsat 7 image. The major features, the massifs, were mapped in a clockwise direction. After mapping the massifs the consistency of the Left and Right polygons, and the consistent direction of the arcs between the feature types, were maintained when mapping the features adjacent to the massifs. This ensured that the Left and Right polygon values common to more than ... one dataset were maintained between each dataset and that the arcs common to more than one dataset maintained the same direction between each dataset. In maintaining the consistency between the datasets the arcs for features adjacent to the massifs flow in an anticlockwise direction. All features were mapped in ESRI's ArcGIS software, using the georeferenced Landsat 7 image as a backdrop. Individual map extents were created for the extent of the mapping around each massif. The massif features were followed by the features adjacent to the massifs. Once all the features were mapped the data was converted to an ArcInfo coverage. The coverage was cleaned with a tolerance of 0.1m. ArcEdit was then used to tidy the line work. Arcs were extended where required and overshoots were deleted. The resultant coverage was built for line and polygon topology. Each polygon feature was then attributed with it's feature type. The polygons were attributed using the georeferenced image as a backdrop. Once completed each arc was attributed with the left and right polygon feature type. These attributes were recorded in the 'Feat_Left' and 'Feat_Right' attribute fields. An additional certainty attribute called 'Line_Type' was also recorded for each arc. The features were then extracted into separate feature coverages. The data was attributed according to the SCAR Feature Catalogue. The individual feature coverages were built and checked for errors. A further visual check was then performed to check the features corresponded to the Landsat 7 image. The individual feature coverages were projected to Geographicals (WGS84). A Relative Planimetic Accuracy of +/- 30m was achieved for the features mapped.
