Summary
Abstract:
Benthic organisms data were collected using sediment sampler and net casts BELLOWS and other platforms in the Gulf of Mexico from 16 May 1974 to 20 February 1978. Data were collected and submitted by Dr. William Sackett of Texas University with support from the Outer Continental Shelf project. The data are from field sampling or surveys of bottom dwelling marine organisms in F132 format. The data ... provide information on species counts and species wet weight from samples collected by point sampling (grab or core) or by tow (dredge or trawl). Three operational kinds of data include: Epifauna, Infauna, and Meiofauna benthic organisms data that roughly correspond to the different sampling methods and collecting institutions that were part of this study. Cruise information such as vessel, start and end dates, investigator, and institution/agency; station numbers, positions and times; and equipment and methods are reported for each survey. Number of individual organisms or total weight of all organisms in the sample is reported for each taxonomic category identified by the researchers (often to Genus and Species taxonomic resolution).

Quality
LOGICAL CONSISTENCY REPORT: The position of observations were plotted on a map to verify gross accuracy of the location information. The years of the collection date were plotted in a histogram to verify the gross accuracy of the date and time stamp for observations. The extracted data set in OBIS-USA format was reviewed by multiple people at NODC and OBIS-USA. ... COMPLETENESS REPORT: In the process of reformatting the data from Benthic Organisms format (f132, see: http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/f132.html), the originator NODC Taxonomic Code ids were transformed to scientific names using the Version 8 of the NODC Taxonomic code available in NODC Accession 0050418. Whenever the originator taxonomic code numbers referred to an outdated taxonomy as identified in the Version 8 NODC Taxonomic Code, the originator value for the NODC Taxonomic Code was provided in the notes section. HORIZONTAL POSITIONAL ACCURACY REPORT: Horizontal accuracy for the data is based on the Collection Code and Verbatim Equipment. For the MAFLA data, Dauphin Island used dredges and trawls and the accuracy of its data is 10,000 meters. Florida State and Univ. Florida both used a Spade Box Corer that has an accuracy of 100 meters. For the STOCS data, Texas A&M used the Smith-McIntyre Grab with a 1000 meter accuracy. University Texas used both the Smith-McIntyre Grab (1000 meters accuracy) and the Otter Trawl (10,000 meters accuracy). LINEAGE/PROCESS STEP DESCRIPTION: Data recovered from the MULti-Discipline Archives Retrieval System, operational at NODC from 1970-1995. Data extracted from the NODC Accession 8500179 using NODC taxonomic code, version 8. Data saved into the OBIS-USA 100 column format using MATLAB code running on NODC servers. The only columns that were represented in the final data extraction were ones that both had values extracted from the original data in NODC Accession 850019 and that could not be described by some global attribute of the data set, requiring the specification of the data value for each record in the ASCII column format. Globally consistent data from other columns are reported here in the metadata file.
Access Constraints
ACCESS CONSTRAINTS: To view constraints placed on dataset, please see Policies and Disclaimer section (from the panel on the left) on OBIS-USA web site at http://www.usgs.gov/obis-usa DISTRIBUTION LIABILITY: NOAA and NODC make no warranty, expressed or implied, nor does the fact of distribution constitute such a warranty. NOAA and NODC cannot assume liability for any ... damages caused by any errors or omissions in the data. OBIS-USA renders information prepared by contributors accessible through dynamic on-line publication. It does not peer-review the quality of the data provided. However, it is confident that the data are the best available in electronic form. OBIS-USA does not own or try to control or limit the use of any data or products accessible through its website. Accordingly, it does not take responsibility for the quality of such data or products, or the use that people may make of them. Users must recognize that the analysis and interpretation of data requires background knowledge and expertise about marine biodiversity (including ecosystems and taxonomy). Users should be aware of possible errors in the use of species names, geo-referencing, data handing and mapping. They should crosscheck their results for possible errors, and qualify their interpretation of any results accordingly. Appropriate caution is thus necessary in the interpretation of results derived from OBIS-USA.
