Summary
Abstract:
This Invertebrate Database includes the data relating to the specimens collected by my students in the Invertebrate Zoology course taught as part of the Applied Marine Biology and Oceanography (AMBO) Program at Southern Maine Community College (SMCC). SMCC was formerly known as Southern Maine Vocational-Technical College (SMVTI), and then Southern Maine Technical College (SMTC). The collection ... began in 1969 and continues to the present (2010) and includes specimens collected primarily (but not exclusively) in the Casco and Saco Bay areas of the Gulf of Maine, as our campus is located on the shore of Casco Bay in South Portland. There are entries from as far north as Nova Scotia and as far south as Florida. The procedure that was followed by the students involved collecting live organisms in the marine environment by what ever means they could, i.e. walking along the shore, dredging from a boat, plankton sampling, SCUBA diving, etc. They recorded the location, substrate, date, organism characteristics when live and in the field, associated organisms, etc. They then brought the specimen to the laboratory where they used a variety of dichotomous and tabular identification manuals to identify the organism. Data was published on the OBIS-USA web site on May 18, 2010 and is available at http://www.usgs.gov/obis-usa.
Purpose:
The data set is based on a database being developed which lists the collection of specimens over 40 years in the Gulf of Maine with the ability to observe, non-quantitatively, the appearance and disappearance of species from the main collection areas.

ATTRIBUTE ACCURACY REPORT: The information in the “SMCC Gulf of Maine Invertebrate Database” is a compilation of forty plus years of student collections in the Marine Invertebrate Zoology course at Southern Maine Community College, Applied Marine Biology and Oceanography (AMBO) Program. This course is designed as an invertebrate field collection and taxonomy course. The specimens handed in and ... identified by the students fulfilled the laboratory requirement of a field collection. Only live specimens, collected and identified by the students could be handed in. Identification was carried out using any and all marine invertebrate identification manuals that were available at the time. Identification down to species (where possible) was required if the manuals were available for that phylum. In those cases where identification was not possible via the manuals, we used technical publications and field guides. As one would expect the number and quality of identification manuals for the Gulf of Maine has increased markedly over the past forty years and therefore so has the quality of our data in many of the phyla. Each specimen handed in by a student was accompanied by a data sheet, which described the characteristics of the organism, the manual used and the steps followed to the correct identity of the species. The specimen was then identified by the instructor and confirmed. If incorrect, the specimen was returned to the student to correct the identification. I, therefore, take full responsibility for the correctness of the identification of the specimens listed in the database within the limitations of the available literature at the time of collection. Signed, Robert E. Siegel, Professor of Marine Science, Applied Marine Biology and Oceanography Program, Southern Maine Community College, South Portland, ME 04106
