Abstract:
Aliwal Shoal was declared a Marine Protected Area in 2004 and baseline data of the reef biota was required. This study was initiated by the Oceanographic Research Institute (ORI) based in Durban to catalogue and describe benthic species in terms of species diversity, richness and percentage cover. The reef communities were also zoned based on habitat type, topography and bathymetry. The zonation of the reef was aimed at assisting the management authority and future monitoring efforts in making recommendations for sustainable use and diver impact based on benthic organism vulnerability.
