Abstract:
The SME ozone data consists of radiances and ozone mixing ratios
measured by two instruments: the ultraviolet ozone spectrometer and
the near-infrared (airglow) spectrometer; covering December 1981 to
December 1986.
From measurements made by the UV ozone spectrometer at 2650.7 and
2964.3 Ang., limb radiances are calibrated and profiled, orbit by
orbit, for an altitude of 41 km to a maximum
... altitude of 83 km at
3.5-km intervals. Similarly, measurements made by the near-IR
spectrometer at 1.27 and 1.87 micrometers are calibrated and profiled,
orbit by orbit, for an altitude up to 106 km. There are 17 (1600 bpi)
tapes for the entire set of UV radiances and 52 tapes for the IR
radiances.
The ozone mixing ratios inverted from the UV and IR radiances are
available in two data sets: the orbital track data, and the daily and
monthly averages.
Orbital track ozone mixing ratios in parts per million by volume from
the UV spectrometer are given for 9 pressure levels from 1.0 to 0.1 mb
(48-65 km), and from the IR spectrometer, 22 pressure levels from
approximately 50 to 90 km. Horizontally, the profiles cover from 85
deg S to 85 deg N in 5-deg latitude intervals.
The daily averages represent the averages of ozone mixing ratios from
four or five orbits per day, with a greater number of orbits occurring
over the western hemisphere. From the daily averages, the monthly
averages are derived. Neither of the products have enough samples to
be considered zonal averages. Current data sets have the effect of
slow steady drifts removed, and the investigators expect that the
long-term ozone behavior is now meaningful.
There are six tapes for the entire set of orbital track ozone, i.e.,
one per year. One tape contains the entire set of daily and monthly
averaged ozone.
The following data sets were transitioned from the National Space
Science Data Center (NSSDC) to the GSFC DAAC:
81-100A-01B > UV Ozone Radiance
81-100A-01C > UV Daily Orbital Ozone Pfl
81-100A-03B > IR Ozone Radiance
81-100A-03C > IR Daily Orbital Ozone Pfl
The following have not been fully transitioned:
81-100A-01E > UV Daily & Monthly Ozone VMR Pfl
81-100A-03E > IR Daily & Monthly Ozone VMR Pfl
