OpenDX - The Open Source Software Project Based on IBM's Visualization Data Explorer
Entry ID: 01-opendx-01
Abstract: IBM Open Visualization Data Explorer (OpenDX) is an application and development
software package for visualizing data, especially 3D data from simulations or
acquired from observations. It uses a Graphical User Interface based on X
windows and Motif. It comes with a complete set of standard visualization tools
for looking at data. These tools include cutting planes, vector line traces,
volume ... rendering, and isosurface/isocontour tools.
OpenDX gives you new control over your data...and new insights into their
meaning. Yet OpenDX is easy to use because it lets you visualize data in ways
you've never dreamed of--without getting bogged down in the technology.
As its name implies, OpenDX is Open Source. The license allows you to freely
create, distribute, and develop visualization solutions as you see fit.
OpenDX is a uniquely powerful, full-featured software package for the
visualization of scientific, engineering and analytical data: Its open system
design is built on a standard interface environments. And its sophisticated
data model provides users with great flexibility in creating visualizations.
With OpenDX, you can create the visualizations you want to create. OpenDX has
been designed to be the place where the art of science and the science of
visualization come together. It's the place where they're combined into one
powerful, flexible framework that lets you "Simply Visualize."
Data Explorer can be used to add visualization capabilities to existing
applications. It is used by companies and institutions for applications in a
large variety of visualization fields including computational fluid dynamics,
medical imagery, computational chemistry, and engineering analysis. For
example, it is currently being used to:
* Identify and manage portfolio risk worldwide for a large multinational
* Depict oil-flow simulations to improve drilling success-rates and increase
* Piece together over 5,000 ceiling fragments from a 1,200-year-old temple in
* Help insurance agents identify opportunities to cross-sell product offerings.
* Visualize developing weather patterns to improve the accuracy of weather
