Ask An Earth Scientist; a Geologically based Virtual Help Desk
Entry ID: 02-virtual_help-geologist-99
Abstract: (Summary adapted from the Scout Report Signpost description)
Provided by the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University
of Hawaii, this educational Website covers topics in and beyond the
fields of geology and geophysics. At the site, users may send
(electronic) questions to 'real live scientists' regarding: Volcanoes
and Igneous Rocks; Geochemistry, the Environment, and Pollution;
... Geophysics and General Geology; Earthquakes and Seismology; Hydrology
and Water Quality; Natural Hazards; Minerals, Gems, Ores and Crystals;
and Sediments and Sedimentary Rocks. Answers are thoughtful and
content-rich, although many are specific to the Hawaiian Islands (as
expected). To submit a question, users must select from a related
topic area and then complete the online submission form. First-time
users should begin by browsing previous questions and FAQs,
however. This is a wonderful resource for students wishing to interact
with established scientists, or for educators seeking clear and
interesting explanations of natural phenomena.
Although there is not a complete list of prior answers, several
recently answered questions and answers are available for browsing.
The answers are categorized by geological topic in the same way that
questions can be posted. Links to related sites and services give
users the opportunity to find additional resources.
