Summary

Abstract: The Urban Landsat: Cities from Space dataset contains images for 66 urban areas and the raw, unerlying data for 28 of these places. Each image shows a Landsat false color composite in UTM projection. The R/G/B layers correspond to TM/ETM+ bands 7/4/2. Each pixel is 30x30 meters in area and most images are 30x30 km in area. Purpose: To serve a wide user community by providing composite Landsat images and raw data for urban areas that can be used in interdisciplinary studies of remote sensing and the environment.

Description: The MODIS Level-3 Land products are generated by the MODIS Adaptive Processing
System (MODAPS), located at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, as gridded
output in the Integerized Sinusoidal (ISIN) projection. These data products are
then sent to the EDC DAAC for archive and distribution. The ISIN projection is
unique to the MODIS land products, analogous to the Sinusoidal projection
except that the ISIN projection is centered about 0Â° longitude and special
coefficients are used to flatten the ellipsoid. The ISIN projection was devised
for the Level-3+ products because it employs a tessellation scheme, efficient
organization, and hierarchical management of the multi-resolution data acquired
by the MODIS sensor.

Description: The Geographic Resources Analysis Support System (GRASS) is a Geographic
Information System (GIS) used for data management, image processing, graphics
production, spatial modelling, and visualization of many types of data. It is
free software released under GNU General Public License (GPL). Originally
written by the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratories
(USA-CERL, 1982-1995), a branch of the US Army Corp of Engineers, as a tool for
land management and environmental planning by the military, GRASS has evolved
into a powerful utility with a wide range of applications in many different
areas of scientific research. GRASS is currently used in academic and
commercial settings around the world, as well as many governmental agencies
including NASA, NOAA, USDA, the National Park Service, the U.S. Census Bureau,
USGS, and many environmental consulting companies.

Description: The General Cartographic Transformation Package (GCTP) is a system of
software routines designed to permit the transformation of coordinate
pairs from one map projection to another. The GCTP is the standard
computer software used by the National Mapping Division for map
projection computations.

Because of requirements internal to the EROS Data Center, the GCTP software
was converted from FORTRAN to the C programming language, and several new
projections were added. During the conversion process, the software was
tested on the following UNIX systems: Data General running DG/UX Release
5.4R2.01 AViiON, SUN running SunOS Release 4.1.3, and Silicon Graphics
running IRIX Release 5.3 IP7. In addition, the software has also been
verified against the current National Mapping Division (NMD) GCTP
software. This new version, GCTPC, is being made available informally
on a 'user-beware' basis. EDC assumes no responsibility for the accuracy
of the routines in this package.
