Summary
Abstract:
Stratigraphic sections from the Weller Coal Measures, the Feather Sandstone, and the Lashley Formation were described from the Allan Hills. 115 samples were taken from these rocks and processes for microfossils in two ways: for phytoliths and pollen. The diagenesis of the rocks was studied by thin section to assess the phytolith preservation capabilities. The usefulness of phytoliths as a paleo-environmental reconstruction tool was determined. The distribution of pollen within the Transantarctic Mountain was previously studied and found that many samples were unusable due to heating from Jurassic dolerite intrusions. There has been little attention to pollen from the Allan Hills and studies of pollen from here was compared with phytolith information.
