Irrigation Production Data System (IPDS)Entry ID: USDA0020
Abstract: The Irrigation Production Data System (IPDS) is a comprehensive
analysis system; it was developed as a tool for analyzing cost
and returns across states and U.S. farm production regions. It
provides a framework for organizing, modifying, and displaying
state-level crop production data. IPDS database incorporates 11
commodities (corn and sorghum for grain, wheat, soybeans,
cotton, rice, oats ... barley, corn silage, alfalfa and other hay).
Crop-specific information includes acreage, yield, price, input
use, cost, returns and breakeven for irrigated and dryland crop.
Potential user-specified input includes price, yield, water use,
land labor and irrigation cost.
Collection Organization: Data compiled from various sources
including: Soil Conservation Service (now called the Natural
Resources Conservation Service), the Cooperative Extension
Service, National Agricultural Statistics Service, Dept. of
Commerce (Bureau of Census -- Farm and Ranch Irrigation Survey).
Collection Methodology: Composite information from sources
Collection Frequency: Only one year of data is used (1984).
Update Characteristics: Not applicable.
IPDS consists of a crop production database organized by a
series of Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheets and macros for use on a
microcomputer. The IPDS database incorporates 1984 production
data for 11 commodities (corn for grain, wheat, soybeans,
cotton, rice, oats, barley, sorghum for grain, corn, silage,
alfalfa hay, and other hay).
