Abstract: Sampling for this program was carried out at nine stations co-located with CTD stations, using the AAD's Rectangular Midwater Trawl (RMT) system, and at three other sites using handheld dip nets also at CTD stations. The RMT is a two-net system: the larger RMT8 uses a ~ 4.5-mm mesh net. The smaller RMT1 has a 150-micron mesh net which we used at four sites, and a 300-micron mesh which we used at ... all other sites after 150-micron mesh nets were torn (see attached table). The RMT tows were carried out for 30 minutes each targeting a ship speed of approx. 1 knot. The nets were opened and closed remotely, and towed at depths selected to target highest water-column concentrations of biomass. The depths for towing were selected using high-frequency (120 and 200 kHz) echosounder rofiles, as well as fluorescence and transmissometer profiles from CTD stations occupied just prior to the tows. Some individual pteropods were preserved in a fixative solution known as 'RNALater' designed for preservation of genetic analysis. These will be analysed at James Cook University and St. Andrews University, Scotland, in collaborative projects. The remainder of the samples are preserved in buffered DI water for analysis of the shells of pteropods and foraminifera. These latter analyses will be carried out at ACE CRC after processing at ACE, with some geochemical analyses to be carried out at Australian National University and Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. This was the second year of a three- year project establishing baseline water-column distributions of calcareous zooplankton for comparison with sedimentary and sediment-trap fossil plankton.
