Abstract: Continuous, high-depth-resolution glacio-chemical measurements in ice core from the Norwegian-U.S. Scientific Traverse of East Antarctica. The traverse traveled from the Norwegian Troll Station near the coast in Dronning Maud Land to near South Pole during the 2007/08 field season and then from the Pole back to Troll during the 2008/09 field season. Continuous chemical and elemental measurements were made on the ice cores using an ice core melter coupled to two High Resolution Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometers as well as a range of fluorimeters, spectrophotometers, and other analytical instruments. Approximately 35 elements and chemical species were measured, providing tracers of sea salt, continental dust, volcanic, biomass burning, and industrial pollution aerosols. Details of an similar though more basic analytical system are given in McConnell et al., ES&T, 2002 and results from a similar analytical system are presented in McConnell et al., PNAS, 2007; McConnell et al., Science, 2007; and McConnell and Edwards, PNAS, 2008; among other publications. Although additional manuscripts are in preparation, initial results from the Norwegian-U.S. cores are given in Anschütz et al., JGR, 2009; Anschütz et al., JGR, 2011; Bisiaux et al., ACP, 2011; and Bisiaux et al., ACP, 2012.
Purpose: Together with shallow radar surveys, the ice cores were collected primarily to determine rescent and historical net snow accumulation rates on the East Antarctic Plateau - a large, relatively unexplored region of very low snowfall that plays an important role in ice sheet mass balance and sea level. The second aim was to develop detailed records of recent and historical aerosol concentration and flux in East Antarctica to: (1) help parameterize and validate global circulation models that include aerosols and (2) evaluate human impacts on dust, burning, and industrial pollution aerosols.
