Cape Cod Bay Ocean Sanctuary and Monitoring Program

Summary

Abstract: Cape Cod Bay is ecologically rich with a complex and diverse array of
coastal and marine habitats. Beaches, wetlands and offshore water provide
important habitats for plant and animal communities that include commercially
valuable species of finfish and shellfish as well as endangered marine mammals
and birds. From our field station in Provincetown, we can easily voyage into

Purpose: The Monitoring Program will provide monthly and annual reports on the
state of Cape Cod Bay.

Materials and Methods: The program measures temperature, salinity, D.O., water
clarity, nitrates, phosphates: water samples will be analyzed for nutrients,
bacterial levels, and pH.

Sample Site Locations: 8 offshore and 21 nearshore stations. Offshore sampling
will take place at previously established sites for the Right Whale Habitat
Program.

Number of Samples Collected: Bi-weekly sampling will begin in mid-April and
continue through October. Nearshore sampling will be conducted at each station,
2-3 hours before high tide and again 2-3 hours after high tide.

Season: mid-April through October
