In order to evaluate the composition and abundance of subtidal
macrobenthos, biweekly cores (18 square centimeters, 5 cm depth)
were collected at two sites ... in the marsh. The sites were at Bread
and Butter Creek (muddy creek bank) and at Debidue Creek (sandy
creek bank). Two replicate cores were collected at each site.
The cores were sieved through a 0.5 mm mesh, and the benthic
infauna were identified and counted. Numerically dominant
individuals were identified to species. The most common taxa were
polychaete worms and oligochaetes.
After January 1985, cores were only collected at the Bread and Butter
Creek site. Also, instead of two replicates, eight replicates
were collected. The data set for the Bread and Butter Creek site
extends from 4 February 1981 until 31 January 1992, and for the
Debidue site from 20 January 1981 until 8 January 1985.
These databases are the result of long-term monitoring begun in the
late 1970s and early 1980s in the North Inlet Estuary, Georgetown
County, South Carolina. The National Science Foundation funded the
Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program in the North Inlet
Estuary from 1981 to June, 1993.
