Abstract: Water Equivalent vs Rain Gauge from the March 1993 Blizzard is a technical report available from the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). On March 12-14, 1993, the eastern seaboard of the U. S. was struck by what is now referred to as: 1) The Storm of the Century, 2) The Blizzard of 93, or 3) The Big One!. (C00484 describes this storm.) One of the interesting and more overlooked aspects of the storm was the discrepancy between liquid water measurements by the rain gauge and water equivalent 'core samples' of the snow/ice on the ground. This report will attempt to show that: 1) The most likely scenario is a problem with 'undercatch' of snowfall, and 2) the careful measurement of water equivalent is an important element for hydrological interests and the climatic records.
Purpose: To make a wide range of climatic data available to researchers and the public.
