Tillage Systems/Cropping Sequences Trial C 1, Long Term Soil Organic Matter Study, AustraliaEntry ID: NSWAG.C1
Abstract: This project began in 1985 at a Warm Temperate SubTropical site in
Australia. The soil at the site is classified as a Vertisol. There
are four rotations: cotton-cotton (until 1991), wheat-cotton (until
1991), cowpea (1993 only), fallow (1993 only). All plots were sown to
cotton 1994-95 and 1995-96. The treatments on each are: Tillage: Disc
followed by chisel followed by ridging, and, Minimum ... till: Reshaping
of ridges with some shallow cultivation.
The measurments made (data available), frequency, and methodology are
a) Vegetation measurements made and frequency
Total above-ground dry matter: Yearly to 4-5 times per season
N, Mg, Ca, K, Na, S, Mo, B, Al, Fe, Cu, Zn once per season (usually
March) Also cotton lint yield and fiber quality parameters.
b) Soil sampling
Time zero soil measurements taken. Details of time zero sample are
given in Constable et al. (1992) - see reference list.
Details of soil sampling method: Other procedures in past but
current is as follows: Spade - all subplots 14-28 locations. Soil pit
- to 1.5m depth, one location on each subplot. Soil is separated into layers.
Details of measuring depths and soil layers: 0-15, 15-30, 30-45,
45-60 cm from each subplot (36 subplots in the

Total carbon: Seasonally (since 1992)
Method of measuring total carbon: Walkley-Black method (see
Hulugalle, 1994 - in reference list)

Particulate organic matter - with dispersion, floatation & sieving
(see Hulugalle, 1994 - see reference list).
Carbon dioxide evolution: 1992 and 1993 only
Method of measuring carbon dioxide evolution: Soil respiration
using NaOH CO2 trap (see Hulugalle, 1994)
Total mineral nitrogen: Yearly
Method of measuring total mineral nitrogen: Colorimetric analysis
after extraction in 1M KCl.
Soil bulk density or weight: Seasonally
Method of measuring soil bulk density or weight: Surface (on
ridges) by kerosene saturation method after McIntyre & Stirk
(1954). Sub-surface by kerosene saturation method and by clod method
after coating with 'saran' resin dissolved in butanone. Shrinkage
curves and indices are derived.
Other nutrients: Exchangeable Ca, Mg, K and Na by method of Tucker.
Other measurements: Dispersion (sedimentation methods), particle
size distribution (hydrometer), plastic limit (drop cone
penetrometer), cone index with recording penetrometer, soil reactivity
(measure of self mulching ability), Ec (1:5 soil:water), root growth
(Trench profile method), soil water content (neutron probe), hydraulic
conductivity (Guelph permeameter; unsuccessful: results too variable)
