Abstract: In English:

ESASSI is the Spanish contribution to the international initiative SASSI (Synoptic Antarctic Shelf Slope Interactions study), one of the core projects endorsed by the International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2009. The project can be summarized in a general objective: the characterization of the southern boundary of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACCb) and the latitudinal variability of ... the Antarctic Slope Front (ASF). In particular, the project will focus on the exchange of heat, fresh water and nutrients taking place between the oceanic regime of the ACC and the continental shelves of the South Scotia Ridge (SSR).

The methodology of the project consisted of an oceanographic survey carried out over the SSR from January 2nd to 23rd 2008 onboard the Spanish RV Hespérides, during which several hydrographic/VMADCP transects were performed across the Ridge. Chemical and biological water samples were taken at each station. Radiometric profiles were deployed daily at the most relevant locations. Continuous measurements of ship position, surface water temperature and salinity, meteorological data and local bathymetry were registered along the ship track.

The ESASSI data set consists of five inputs: (1) ESASSI_ADCP_HE125 for VMADCP data; (2) ESASSI_CTD_HE125 for CTD data; (3) ESASSI_BTL_HE125 for chemical and biological data obtained from Niskin bottle water samples; (4) ESASSI_RAD_HE125 for radiometric data; and (5) ESASSI_SADO_HE125 for the continuous data obtained along the ship track.

ESASSI es la contribución española a la iniciativa internacional SASSI (Synoptic Antarctic Shelf Slope Interactions study), uno de los proyectos líderes del Año Polar Internacional (API) 2007-2009. El objetivo general del proyecto es la caracterización de la frontera sur de la Corriente Circumpolar Antártica (ACCb) y de la variabilidad meridional del Frente de Talud Antártico (ASF). En particular, se pretende determinar el papel del ASF en el intercambio de calor y aporte de agua dulce y nutrientes que se establece entre el régimen oceánico de la Corriente Circumpolar y las plataformas continentales en la región de la Dorsal de Escocia del Sur.

La metodología del proyecto se basa en una campaña oceanográfica llevada a cabo en la región de la Dorsal del 2 al 23 de enero de 2008 a bordo del BIO Hespérides, durante la cual se han realizado diferentes transectos de CTD/VMADCP a través y a lo largo de la Dorsal. En cada estación se han obtenido medidas hidrográficas, así como muestras químicas y biológicas. Además, se realizaron perfiles radiométricos en las estaciones consideradas más relevantes. Se ha registrado de manera continuada con el SADO del buque, por lo que se incluyen datos de temperatura y salinidad superficial, datos meteorológicos, datos de posición y de sonda a lo largo del trazado del barco.

El conjunto de metadatos del proyecto ESASSI está formado por cinco entradas: (1) ESASSI_ADCP_HE125 para datos de VMADCP; (2) ESASSI_CTD_HE125 para datos del CTD; (3) ESASSI_BTL_HE125 para datos químicos y biológicos recogidos a partir de las muestras de agua obtenidos de las botellas Niskin; (4) ESASSI_RAD_HE125 para los datos radiométricos; y (5) ESASSI_SADO_HE125 para los datos obtenidos en contínuo a lo largo de toda la traza del barco.
